CAMPING WITH A DOG Are you thinking about taking your dog camping. The outdoors is one of the best places to spend time with your dog. A dog loves all the new smells, sounds and sights. The following are some tips that will make camping with your dog more enjoyable: Schedule a pre-trip visit to the Veterinarian. o All shots and vaccinations should be current. o Obtain a Rabies tag for your dog?s collar. o Consider a Lyme disease vaccine. o Obtain a current copy of their records and Vet's telephone number.
o The nametag should include the Dog?s name, your name, address and telephone number. o Consider a Temporary tags ? it should list the name and telephone phone number of where you are staying. o Microchips, tattoos and pet registries are also available.
o Bring the Dog?s medications and copy of their prescriptions. o Consider use of an animal carrier / travel crate. o Pack plenty of water from home for your dog. o Bring their regular food bowls, food and treats. To avoid problems, keep them on their regular schedule. o Bring their chew toys and dog brush. o Always bring their collar and leash. An extra collar and leash may be a good idea. o Pack first aid items for your dog. o Pack a towel. o Pack bedding. o Obtain the phone number of a vet in the area where you are staying. o Your dog may experience increased exposure to ticks and fleas. Bring the proper tick / flea collars, repellants or use a Frontline application. Remember, diseases can also be obtained from wild animals and insects.
o Check with your destination to confirm that dogs are permitted. Pets are prohibited at many state and national parks. o When making your reservation, try to obtain a site with some shade for your dog.
o It is of critical importance that you respect the other campers around you: Make sure you have complete control over your dog at all times. Keep your Dog on their leash. Do not allow your dog to bark. Frequent and continued barking disturbs wildlife and other campers. Closely supervise your dog around children, other visitors and other dogs. Never leave your dog outside unattended. Always pick up after your dog. Make use of designated dog walking areas. Use Gladlock or Ziplock bags to pick up after them and properly dispose of it in appropriate trash containers.? o Give your dog time to adjust to their new surroundings. o Give them time to rest. o Watch that your dog doesn't get tangled around tent poles or stakes, tables, trees, rocks, coolers, cars, etc. o Make sure your dog receives enough exercise. o Be aware of how weather conditions affect your dog - heat, cold, rain, dust, smoke, etc. o Remove any leftover food after your dog eats. This food could attract unwanted insects or wildlife. o Be courteous of others while walking your dog. Keep your dog calm and controlled. o Consider your dogs sleeping arrangements. |
