HIKING

Hiking is one of the most enjoyable outdoor recreation activities. It is enjoyed by thousands of people, can be experienced by people of all ages, is very easy for beginners, and provides very good exercise and an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy nature.

But before you begin your hike, there are a number of safety precautions to undertake:

1.NEVER hike alone - It is best to have at least one other person with you, if not a group of people.

2.Tell a friend, neighbor or parents back at home about your hiking itinerary - Let them know where you and your party will be going and the approximate time you anticipate to return. This information, should you go missing, will enable the authorities to locate you.

3. Advise the Park Ranger of your plans - If you are heading out on a long hike, it is recommended that you sign in at the trailhead and/or tell a park ranger of route you will be taking.

4.Safety equipment - A sports whistle, mobile telephone, light snacks, compass, trail map, water, matches and a well-stocked First Aid kits are essential items to carry with you on the trail.

Know your fitness level

Always choose a hike that will match your fitness level.  If you or those you are hiking with are new to hiking, it is best to start with a short, easy hike.  As you become more experienced, you can attempt more difficult hikes.? Don?t be ashamed to start with an easy hike, you can always try something more advanced later. It is better to be safe than sorry by selecting a trail is too easy than one that is far too hard.

Know your trail

Prior to your hike, find out as much as you can about the trail or course you wish to hike. It is best to know ahead what you will encounter - for example, will you be hiking up hill, or through water, or climbing rocks What wildlife has been spotted in the area recently ? Where are the scenic stop points along the way ?

Once on your hiking trip, stay on the hiking trail.? If you want more of a challenging hike, check with the Park Ranger to inquire if you can join an experienced-lead hiking group or pair up with an experienced guide.

Clothing and Shoes

Make sure you wear comfortable clothes. You should always layer your clothing. If the weather is warm, you can easily remove layers. If the weather is cool or cold, you can add layers. Always bring your rain gear.

Good shoes are an essential item. For new hikers, comfortable shoes such as sneakers or boots will suffice. For the experienced hiker, who is attempting a more difficult hike, a pair of good hiking boots is necessary.

Have FUN!

Remember, hiking is FUN! To get the maximum enjoyment from your trip, always prepare for your hike, hike with the proper equipment, and never hike alone. A safe hike is a happy hike.
